2019 - Three specific elements of the Día de Los Muertos celebration inform unique designs in three iconic Nike Sportswear silhouettes: Nike Air Force 1 La Calaca, Nike Air Max 95 La Catrina and Nike Cortez El Altar.
The reflective sugar skulls pattern on the Air Force 1 is inspired by La Calaca, an instrumental part of the altars created during the holiday which denote the journey of life after death. The white represents the sugar, while colors bring to life the creative design details of the traditional offerings.
La Catrina, or female skeleton figure, is represented throughout the annual tradition and indicates a happy afterlife. In the Air Max 95, La Catrina takes form through shapes of the human body throughout the shoe. The system of laces reproduces the ribs, the sole imitates the spine, while the upper, in mesh and suede, correspond to the muscle fibers.
